How Proton Authenticator works

Just download the app, scan your QR codes or import existing codes, and you’re set. You don’t need a Proton Account to use it.

Step 1

Download the authenticator app

Get Proton Authenticator for your device. You can sign in to your Proton Account if you want to sync 2FA codes across your devices, but login isn’t required.

Step 2

Enable 2FA on your accounts

When you enable 2FA on an account, the website or app will provide you with a QR code or a secret key. Scan the QR code or enter the key into Proton Authenticator. You can also import tokens from another authenticator.

Step 3

Use codes to securely log in

Proton Authenticator will generate a new 6-digit code every few seconds. When logging in to an account, enter the code as an extra layer of security.

I installed 2FAS; however, i hated the fact that they did not have a desktop app. So I switched to Proton Authenticator. honestly, I like 2FAS GUI better than Proton's but having a desktop app is important for me.

I still have 2FAS installed on my phone and use it once in a while lol

Kieran Whatley

Extremely good app. it lets me use it in a floating window so I can easily see the code I need. The interface is clean and easy to understand, with the ability to add codes being in a nice and easy plus button. I would rather rate it 4.5 not 5, but I can't do half stars. the loss of the 0.5 star is just because I would like to be able to set my own icon as one of my codes does.

Jacob Feece

Essentially the same to Google Authenticator with way more security, customization, privacy, and many other features. Also LOVE the fact that I can transfer from common authenticator app, making the change be quick, easy, and obvious. Most of my codes came from Google Auth, but I wish Authy had the ability to transfer.

The proton authenticator does not require anyone to actually be logged in their account. This is only relevant if you want to sync account devices. As long as have the device download on your phone, you can access the codes without logging into anything.

Proton Authenticator. I find the best one

OP: 2FAS is limited to saving your 2fa codes to google drive. I would use proton authenticator.

What is an authenticator app?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second layer of login security to your accounts, in addition to your password. Even if hackers know your password, they can’t access your account without this second code. An authenticator app generates one-time codes right on your device — safer and quicker than having codes sent by email or SMS.

Proton Authenticator is an open source and end-to-end encrypted 2FA app that’s simple and free to use. It is available on all platforms, including desktop. Easily sync or back up your 2FA codes so you never lose access to your accounts.

The authenticator that puts you first

Other authenticator apps focus on locking you into Big Tech ecosystems or serving you ads. Proton Authenticator is different. It has no ads, no trackers, and is open source, so you can verify its code. See how easy 2FA can be when your security and privacy are the priority.
